Apple iPhone™ Update Discoveries & Delights…
Since most everyone under the sun has posted (or I should more acurately state “re-posted”) everything that the latest iPhone update has to offer visavi Steve Job’s keynote presentation. I thought I would comment on two features that some people might have missed, and certainly every large review site has missed.Previous versions of the iPhone/iTunes did not to my recollection have a “Manage Music Manually.” option in the iPhone syncing tab. This welcomed option now allows for you to select it and finally play music on your iPhone through your paired computer, much in the same way that you could with most of the previous iPod models. It is worth noting that while this opens up that feature, it isn’t accompanied by the iPod-esc diskmode that was loosely associated with it in the past. Also it doesn’t allow for playback on foreign machines without an erase. We can only hope that with SDK coming out next month that diskmode will be enabled, in a secure means.
The second thing I noticed was how two way syncing has now been improved. This is specifically true for podcasts, video podcasts, movies, and television shows. Before when you were watching a media of this sort and you paused it on your computer, sync’ed to your phone, you could pickup where you left off. But the bookmarking was only one way. That is, when you would watch you content further on the iPhone and sync with you computer, iTunes on your computer wasn’t smart enough to update the playback location. This is now fixed. My guess is that no one really noticed this until the rentals downloads were proposed and user interaction, as well as the playback timer, where consider for this release. All and all a greatly welcomed tweak. I am curious to see if this information is preserved when syncing across multiple iPhones/iPods/AppleTVs. If it is then Apple is, perhaps by happenstance, closer to a “my media follows me” playback approach.Anyone have any other features they notice, minor or not, that no one has seemed to post about feel free to post them in the comments.
